Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month

Toys and Gifts AwarenessDecember is Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month thanks to all the new toys flooding the market. Prevent Blindness America sponsors this program to remind consumers to look for safe toys to prevent accidents and injury to children. When looking for toys consumers should carefully examine what they are buying. Plastic wrap on toys should be thrown away after purchase before the child touches it.

When purchasing stuffed animals and cloth dolls look for washable, flame resistant materials. Metal toys for younger children should not have sharp metal or glass edges that can cut children. Some toys with long strings are dangerous to babies and young children. They can choke or suffocate playing with these toys. Don't hang string toys from cribs or play pens. When buying stuffed animals for children under three avoid any with button eyes or parts that can become loose. A child can choke on this.

Electric toys like cars, planes, and trains should be purchased for children over eight. They should meet safety standards and adults should teach and supervise children on how to use them properly. Dart games can be dangerous and should be avoided for children under 12. Avoid toys with sharp points that can cut or injure the skin. When buying rattles, pacifiers and other toys for infants make sure they are large enough not to get lodge in the baby's throat.. Toy guns and those with caps should be fired outdoors. Adults should show children how to use them safely.

Many toys are labeled and will tell you the age that it is appropriate for. Don't give young children uninflated balloons because some have choked on them. Look for well designed toys that are sturdy with clear instructions, use non-toxic materials. and meet safety standards.Coming soon.
