Foot fractures can occur from direct trauma to the foot or simply from repetitive stress on the bones from either a new activity, or if feet aren’t properly supported.

Another serious injury in the same area is a Jones fracture, which occurs near the base of the bone of the 5th metatarsal. This fracture disrupts the blood supply to the bone. This injury may take longer to heal or require surgery.

A LisFranc fracture is where one or all of the metatarsals are displaced.

The position of the metatarsal after surgery is crucial. If you suspect you have a metatarsal or foot fracture, it is important to seek out care from a Foot and Ankle Specialist. X-rays and even advanced imaging may be needed to diagnose the fractures and are also helpful in surgical planning if necessary.

Other bones in the foot can also be fractured, however are less common. The calcaneus, or heel bone, can be fractured from a fall from a height. The smaller, dense bones of the midfoot can also be fractuted, typically from direct trauma.
